Matching Beer with Food

By: J.Morgan

Many people have an idea of how to pair wine and food together, but did you know that you can also pair beer and food? There are some great beer-food combinations available that complement each other beautifully. When pairing beer and food together, it is very similar to wine and food in the sense that you can create unique matches that complement certain flavors from the meal, snack, or dessert that you serve.

There are a few guidelines that you can follow to get the best results; for example, if you are serving light foods, then you should have a light beer. If you serve food that is considered heavier, then you need a heavy beer. This is the rule that you should follow when you first begin pairing beer with foods.

Here is a list of food and the type of beer that goes best with it:

  • Roast chicken – Dunkel lager

  • Roast leg-of-lamb – Scottish ale

  • Beef teriyaki – Cream ale

  • Chicken Kiev – Bohemian pilsner

  • Roast beef – British-style pale ale

  • Roast beef with gravy – Scottish ale

  • Raw oysters – Stout

  • Smoked salmon – Dry stout

  • Barbecued salmon – Dunkel lager

  • Pork ribs with BBQ sauce – Vienna lager

  • Beef vegetable – English brown ale

  • Green salad with cream dressing – Pilsner

Whenever you are serving spicy foods, it is best to serve a light beer, because you will not be able to distinguish the taste of a heavy beer—the spicy foods will dominate your taste buds. Most any of the light ales or light lagers will work fine. When pairing beer and food together, it is wise that you choose the food first and then decide which beer to use with the meal. This way, it will be easier to get the right combination.

If you love drinking beer and have never tired pairing beer and food together before, you should give it a try. There are many combinations that complement each other very well. The beer can really bring out the taste of certain foods in ways that you wouldn’t have imagined. Further, it can be a lot of fun, as well.

Just take a little time and plan out your meals so you can get the right combination and you will be enjoying foods in a whole new way. Pairing beer and food together can be perfect for certain dinner parties or enjoyed as a regular meal for every day. Have fun experimenting with different options.
